Gretna Green Wedding

A Gretna Green wedding has become increasingly popular with many couples who want a romantic wedding performed over the famous anvil in a beautiful location. The Gretna Green area is steeped in romantic history as young couples used to elope here to be married in Scotland where it was legal to marry at the age of 16 - when English law did not allow couples to marry until they were 18 years old without their parents written consent.

Gretna Green, is just one mile over the English / Scottish border and has for over 250 years been associated with runaway marriages - Now it is one of the world’s most popular wedding venues!

There is now a new purpose built "Anvil Hall" that is set in its own grounds, away from other wedding parties and the many tourists that usually visit Gretna Green. A bit theatrical - but all weddings there are conducted by candlelight - there are lots of locations for photographs inside and around this modern "licence for weddings" venue.

One of our daughter's had her romantic Gretna Green wedding in the Gretna Green register office and then went to the the old (traditional) Gretna Green Blacksmith's Workshop to the "real" anvil for the blessing - where another wedding ceremony was carried out for the couple. After the second Gretna Green wedding the resident piper played a skirl or two outside.

The surrounding area was very photogenic with the horseshoe arch, Gretna Green sign and rustic buildings.

Today the laws are different, but the thought of "running away" to a Gretna Green Wedding still appeals to many couples who want to indulge themselves in the romance of doing something different for their wedding. Gretna Green can cater for a couple who arrive by themselves right up to parties of a hundred or more. So why not have your wedding in a place renowned for it's romantic wedding history.
