Wedding Speeches

There are generally only three accepted wedding speeches given at a wedding reception they are, the bride's father's speech, the bridegroom's speech and lastly the best man's speech. No further speeches are required according to etiquette

Although other wedding speeches are permissible. It is not unusual for the bridegroom's father to give a short speech of thanks to the host and hostess for organising the occasion, or the bride to have the bridesmaid-in-chief or maid of honour to give a wedding speech on her behalf.

Father of the bride's wedding speech

The bride's father should be called upon by the best man or toastmaster to propose a toast of "health and happiness to the bride and groom". Before which he would normally welcome the groom's parents, the relatives of both families any other guests. He would normally welcome the groom into his family and finally say a few words about his daughter.

Groom's wedding speech

The groom makes a reply on behalf of himself and his bride. He should take the opportunity to thank his parents for there guidance, love and care during his upbringing, for the start they gave him in life and for their good wishes for his future and that of his new wife. The bridegroom should also take this opportunity on behalf of his new wife and himself to thank all those present for their gifts.

Should there be any close members of the family who have not been able to attend the wedding because of illness, they should be mentioned and wished for a early and complete recovery.

To conclude, the bridegroom must propose the toast of the bridesmaids, and thank them for a job well done, he may also present them with a small gift on behalf of the bride and himself as a token of their appreciation.

Best man's wedding speeches

Groom's wedding speechIt is the best man's duty to respond to the groom's toast to the bridesmaids on their behalf. The best man's wedding speech should be as light hearted as possible and fun. It should be the high spot of the reception - and it is very often his ability to make his wedding speech, with humour and related interest - That is the main deciding factor on making the selection of the best man. So there should be no pressure there then!

The following wedding speeches are optional as far as wedding etiquette is concerned.
